A birthday is a recurring civil date
The next occurrence depends on today's local date
The birth year establishes a valid source date and supports an accompanying age result, but the countdown itself recurs by month and day. The calculator constructs the observed birthday in the current year. If that date is today, the result is zero. If it remains ahead, that is the target. If it has passed, the target moves to the following year.
Zero is useful information: “birthday today” should not silently become roughly 365 days merely because the next future instant is technically next year. The tool labels the current occurrence and can separately show the following age without redefining the countdown.
Today is derived from the browser's local calendar. Two people opening the page at the same instant on opposite sides of midnight may have different current dates and therefore different countdowns. This is expected for a date-only personal reminder.

Non-leap years use February 28 on this page
A February 29 birth date exists only in a Gregorian leap year. For countdown arithmetic, this page observes it on February 28 when the target year has no February 29. That is a transparent product rule, not a universal statement about how every person celebrates or how every authority determines age.

What happens when the birthday is today?
The countdown is zero calendar days and the current local date is reported as the observed birthday. The page does not skip immediately to next year's occurrence.
How is a February 29 birthday counted in a non-leap year?
This countdown observes February 29 on February 28 when the target year is not a leap year. A person or institution may choose March 1 instead, so use their rule when it matters.
Does the countdown count hours and minutes?
No. It counts Gregorian date boundaries from today's local date to the next observed birthday date. It does not create a midnight timestamp or claim a precise elapsed-hour countdown.
Why must I enter the full birth date?
The YYYY-MM-DD value validates the original date, including whether February 29 was possible. The countdown uses month and day for recurrence while the age result can use the year.
Can the birthday countdown decide an age-based entitlement?
No. It is a personal planning aid and general calendar calculation. It does not determine legal age, employment, school placement, insurance, voting, benefits, retirement, or any official deadline.
